Figuring out how to style a polished, summer work outfit when it’s sweltering hot outside can be a difficult task for any consumer. First, there’s the stress around traveling to the office: perhaps you’re biking or walking during your workday commute, or you frequently have lunch outdoors in the sunshine. Then, there’s the change of environment from outdoor heat to indoor air conditioners with a little too much power, leaving you going from sun-baked to flash-frozen. And of course, there’s almost always an office dress code—as out of date as it may be—to consider, as well! How can one possibly dress for all of these different moments throughout the summer months?
While you want to make sure that you’re maintaining the dress code, you also want to stay comfortable throughout the work day (and try not to freeze in the office air conditioning or melt on the commute home).
We polled our team of stylists and asked them to provide their top tips for summer office outfits in addition to spilling a few secrets we share with our clients about beating the heat while staying office-appropriate. Today, our style team is here to give you some tips and tricks on how to navigate the tricky, sweaty situation that is summer office wear. Let’s dive in!
A good pair of ankle-length trousers or a flouncy full-sleeved blouse isn’t off-limits when it’s 90 degrees out! Just make sure they’re summer-proof by choosing looser silhouettes, flexible fits, and breathable fabrics like cotton, lyocell, and linen. Brands like Banana Republic, Gap, and Eileen Fisher all have breathable linen and cotton pieces that can be worn year-round. For more colorful options, look to Farm Rio, J. Crew, and Mango for tropical prints that won’t leave you sweltering in the heat.
Curious about how to rock loose-fitting styles with a shorter silhouette? Take your pieces to a local tailor or alterations specialist, and work with them to hem or adjust your pieces to the right length for your body type.
For a more feminine look, belt up a white maxi or midi dress to look instantly chic and put together. Wearing white will attract the least amount of heat from the sun, and you can choose light, airy fabrics such as linen or cotton for a breathable feel. This is also the perfect time of year for a cream (or colorful) silk skirt. Pair it with a neutral shell (more on that later), your favorite blouse, and a lightweight blazer scrunched at the sleeves.
If you’re looking for a more masculine option, try linen trousers, or lightweight chinos in a looser fit! A blazer is also always an option here, but don’t forget about light, structured jackets that can keep you cool but provide a sharpening line for your silhouette. Details such as vents and pleats are also important to look for as they provide crisp lines and a bit more breathability in your clothing.
While this might seem counterintuitive, having office-appropriate layers on hand (like a trench coat or blazer) will keep you prepared for both inside and outside temperatures (aka that freezing or melting situation mentioned earlier). Other lightweight fabric layering options include a light cardigan, shawl or scarf, and a wrap. Perfect fabrics for these include cashmere, merino wool, or cotton depending on how warm or cool you’d like to remain. Make sure to select items that are easy to transition into (and out of) as well: avoid items that have excessive buttons, zippers, or any accessory that isn’t easy to adjust throughout the changing temperatures of the day.
It’s a good idea to upgrade your basics for this look. Layering up a silk cami (for a more feminine look) or a high-quality white shirt (for a more masculine look) will make you look effortlessly polished, while also ensuring you’re not sweating buckets at the office. Choose neutral colors for these shell layers so you can easily mix and match them with different office outfits—bonus points if you find a few in each color! These are great basics to stock up on during seasonal sales at your favorite online or brick-and-mortar stores.
If a power suit is mandatory, try to choose a monochrome, lightweight option, for a low-effort but elevated look. Look for fabrics such as cotton, linen, or chambray that will provide maximum stretch and breathability. For summer, go for white or light neutral colors to keep the sun off your back. You’ll also be able to mix and match these top and bottom pieces of your suit with other items in your summer work wardrobe, assuming they’re a comparable color in your preferred palette. For example, mix a cream linen blazer with a fuschia midi skirt and pair the cream linen pants with a light blue chambray shirt for multiple outfit combinations. Again, look for items with vents or pleats so you can maximize the airflow throughout your garment. You’ll be surprised at what a difference it makes.
We hope you found these tips useful! Remember, stick with styles that don’t stick to you; opt for looser fits in comfortable fabrics like cotton and linen, and don’t be afraid to put on a few layers you can easily take off throughout the day! And of course, sticking to a simple neutral color palette in shades that flatter you is the number one way to maximize your wardrobe all year round.
